Matt Stockham Brown is a drummer/composer born and living in Bristol, England. His approach is firmly rooted in groove whilst also being open to the exploration of texture, melody, freedom, energy and angles behind the kit. Matt’s individually musical and creative approach has led him to work globally with the likes of Massive Attack, Rodriguez (Searching For Sugarman), Shabaka Hutchings, Gregory Porter, This Is The Kit, Mark Ford (The Black Crowes), Pee Wee Ellis, Kirk Fletcher, Get The Blessing, Lillian Boutte, Ali Chant, Ben Lamdin, Elder Island, Squirrel Flower, Liz Lawrence, Paraorchestra, Cosmo Sheldrake, Cloth and many more.

Between 2019 and 2023 Matt drummed and composed with Bristol project Run Logan Run. Shortly after joining, the band won the Montreux Jazz Festival Talent award (2019) and Matt was invited back in 2021 to be a fellow of the Montreux Jazz Festival Academy. The band received regular airplay on BBC Radio 3, 4, 6 and released two albums together, ‘For A Brief Moment We Could Smell The Flowers’ and ‘Nature Will Take Care Of You’, on Bristol’s Wormdiscs. 4/5 stars in Mojo Mag, 8/10 in Clash and 4/5 in Jazzwise.

Matt has always been heavily involved with various original projects based in Bristol such as Sefrial, Dakhla Brass, Orfic and Modulus III. Due to his work with Dakhla Brass In 2014 Matt was featured in the ’10 British Newcomers’ article of top UK drumming magazine ‘Rhythm’. The band also performed at Montreal Jazz Festival for BBC Introducing as well as The Royal Albert Hall with Jamie Cullum at his Prom.

2025 will see the exciting launch of ‘6161’ on Severn Songs label. A surge of fiercely drum led and brass heavy Alt Jazz. 6161 features all original compositions by Matt and the 6 piece line up consists of Drums, Synths (Dan Moore), Baritone Sax (Tom Taylor), two Tenor Saxophones (Jake McMurchie and Sophie Stockham) and Trumpet (Pete Judge).
